It may be too late to order a new football for that post-Thanksgiving-dinner backyard scrimmage, but you still have Christmas and those pre-Super Bowl games to gear up for. Just be sure to play fair; we suggest you start with a Fair Trade Certified football, made by Fair Trade Sports ($29.99; www.fairtradesports.com).
In addition to being the world's only Fair Trade sports equipment, the football, along with the company's soccer balls, volleyballs, basketballs and frisbees, are the world's only non-agricultural product certified by Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International (FLO). Basically, that means the people who very diligently sew every stitch of every panel on those soccer balls are paid a higher than standard wage, and there's never any child labor involved. But it gets better: The interior linings of these balls incorporate rubber harvested from Forest Stewardship Council-certified rubber trees.
Now, if only these footballs could help Auburn beat Alabama this Saturday, they might just be on to something….
