Waxed Paper's in the Bag

With school around the corner, are you stocked up on supplies for the daily lunch-making routine - lunch boxes, thermoses, waxed paper bags? It's been a while, I would bet, since you've folded a sandwich into waxed paper or dropped a handful of carrots into a waxed paper sack. But maybe it's time to rethink the lowly sandwich bag. I prefer using reusable containers whenever possible, but a waxed paper sandwich bag might just come out ahead of its all-plastic cousin in a life cycle analysis.

Waxed paper and waxed paper bags from Natural Value are made of unbleached paper that's got a thin coat of petroleum-based paraffin or wax, which is approved for food storage use by the FDA. Beeswax by the way is not. For more from The Green Guide about safer food storage containers, read our Product Report.

I disagree. Waxed paper cannot be recycled due to the petroleum-based coating. The alternative is a food-based, biodegradable coating called EvCoat, currently the food distributor, Evco. The PWR series detailed at http://www.evco-research.com/paper_products.asp is the one to use. EvCote PWRHF-40 could be used for sandwich wraps and more.
