Allergy sufferers, take heed. More carbon dioxide pollution encourages plant growth, which means more ragweed and tree pollen. In fact, the ubiquitous weed makes nearly twice as much pollen now as it did 100 years ago and will likely double its production again over the coming century with predicted increases in carbon dioxide levels, according to a U.S. Department of Agriculture study. Results of USDA's study are to be published in an upcoming issue of World Resource Review, a journal of climate-change issues.

What to do? To reduce your daily exposure to allergens and lung irritants, consider these simple measures:

Check your local weather reports for air quality, including smog and pollen counts, before spending time outside. If outdoor air is polluted, keep windows closed. Exercise in early morning, before smog and pollen rise with the day's heat. For current local air quality conditions, see www.epa.gov/airnow.

Use a doormat to reduce tracking-in of dirt and particles. Leave shoes by the door.

Take up and wash carpets, in which pollutants collect.

Use HEPA filters, which remove microscopic pollen particles, in vacuum cleaners, air-purifying machines (see GG 90) and air conditioners.

Help reduce CO2 emissions in your daily life. For more information, learn aboutsimple CO2 shedding steps you can take.

thanks for the tip emain I particularly like the tip to leave shoes by the door. Saves on the clean up and tracks less debris into the home. Also saves carpet, rugs etc.

Thanks for the tips. I take big care, because I have COPD. Leave the shoes I think good idea. But, now that smoking is forbidden in closed places, everybody smokes all time outdoor, so besides polen and smog, we have strong cigarette smoke.More pollution for the non-smokers: we can't go outside in town. I suffer a lot!
