Both farms have had to contend with a fickle regulatory environment: In April 2004, the USDA took seafood out of the organic program only to have Ann Veneman, former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, rescind the change in May. Deborah Brister, co-chair of the National Organic Program's Aquaculture Workgroup, says, "The National Organic Program has sent a series of mixed messages to national and international producers and certifiers over the past year, and now everyone is confused."

In the meantime, both companies' shrimp are certified organic, albeit not kosher.
