Conventional furniture contains paints and dyes that offgas volatile organic compounds (VOCs), plywood and particleboard held together with formaldehyde-based glues that emit carcinogenic fumes, and finishes that release neurotoxic toluene. Most furniture is also made of virgin wood, metal or plastic, putting undue stress on the environment. Instead, look for recycled materials, Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified wood from well-managed forests, water-based adhesives and plant-oil finishes. The companies below offer great alternatives:
Product Picks: Levy Design and Manufacturing makes ultra-modern, eye-catching chairs, tables and shelves out of 30 percent post-consumer recycled cardboard (buffed to a velvety finish) and low-VOC water-based glues ($345-$595; www.cardboardchair.com, 919-672-4192). The whimsical Spring Chair (starting at $900) is made of reclaimed heart pine and truck springs (and can come with a water-based lacquer finish) by Brooklyn-based Cambium Studio (www.cambiumstudio.com, 718-366-2846). Fast-growing bamboo is dyed with food colorings and bound with proprietary plant-based adhesives to fashion the beautiful Nung chair ($1,280) and other handmade pieces by Xeno Objects. Their Klom Koffee table ($880) makes an elegant addition to a living room. The items are finished with a no-VOC clear coat (www.xenoobjects.com, 512-371-9908). Starting at $155 are the 100 percent post-consumer recycled plastic Adirondack chairs, benches and picnic tables by Colorado-based Eco-Products (www.ecoproducts.com, 303-449-1876). For something truly unique, consider Keilhauer's high-concept Felt chair ($4,848) or ottoman ($1,584) designed by Brent Cordner. Layered felt (finished with leather) fits over a steel frame (www.keilhauer.com, 800-724-5665).
