Dining Room

Woodshanti's graceful bamboo table ($1,900) has FSC-certified mahogany edge banding and legs. The finish is made of linseed oil, and the glue is formaldehyde-free (www.woodshanti.com, 415-822-8100).

A worthy splurge: IF Green's Sling Back Chair, constructed from FSC-certified alder with natural latex foam or organic cotton batting ($475/each). It's finished with hard wax or linseed oils and upholstered in red leather from factory remnants or in recycled polyester fabrics. Also available in bamboo or Plyboo, a bamboo plywood (www.ifgreen.com, 503-771-5730).

Kitchen

For an extra food-prep surface and storage, try Ikea's kitchen carts made of solid birch from well-managed forests. The Bekvam ($49.99) is unfinished; the Forhoja ($79.99) is finished with a clear nitrocellulose lacquer and larger, with drawers that pull out from two directions and two shelves, each with space for nine bottles (www.ikea.com, 800-434-IKEA).

Office

Green Culture's Solid Maple Writing Desk ($895) comes with a handy bookshelf and two drawers. It's available unfinished or finished with tung oil and beeswax (which gives it a honey-like hue). The wood is FSC-certified and from forests in Washington and Oregon. Add a matching hutch for more shelf space ($575; www.greenculture.com, 877-204-7336).
