As for cell phone towers, the World Health Organization states that "[radiofrequency] exposure to a user of a mobile phone is far higher than to a person living near a cellular base station." However, cell phone towers do pose a threat to migrating birds.

What You Can Do

*Don't let your only phone be a cell phone.

*Limit call duration.

*Use a hands-free set to avoid holding the phone against your head.

*Recycle or donate rather than toss old cell phones; see www.eco-cell.org and www.earth911.org.

*Help preserve migratory bird habitats by buying certified "bird friendly" shade-grown coffee. For a retailer near you, see www.nationalzoo.si.edu.
