On cold wintry days when yet-to-be-built snowmen summon your children outside, keep them warm with gentle, natural fiber clothing and coats free of water- and stain-repelling perfluorochemical (PFC) fabric treatments (see "Raingear," pg. 11). Even if they complain, "younger children and infants need one more layer than you would need as an adult," advises Gerard Breitzer, D.O., professor in the department of pediatrics at Michigan State University. "It's also key in colder weather to cover faces and put on lip balm."
