Visit a new government website, the USDA Nutrient Database for Standard Reference, www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/Data/SR15/sr15.html, and get the skinny on the fats and other nutrients in 6200 common foods. The Agricultural Research Service of the USDA provides more information than you currently get in any food label. 117 nutrient categories are listed for each food, including glycines, tryptophan, retinol, fatty acids, and amino acids, along with the USDA's independent assessment of the item's vitamin, mineral, protein, fiber, and calorie content. A wide variety of foods are surveyed, including fruits, vegetables, meat products, baked goods, candies, snacks, and breakfast cereals , so there's certain to be information of interest to everyone.
