Photo: Father's Day Finds

Finding the right green gift for Dad means picking items that fit who he is...or wants to be.  Appeal to his sense of adventure this Father's Day and check our picks for outdoor gear. You don't need to take out a second mortgage for a $30,000 Aptera, even if it is the most futuristic-looking electric vehicle for sale. For an exciting way to get around, Ocean Kayak's Prowler 13 Angler Recycled Sit-on-Top kayak comes with rigging, seat back, storage areas and a hull built out of 100 percent recycled post-industrial plastic from the kayak production process ($899; www.oceankayak.com). He can drag his kayak to the beach, wearing Simple's Stop Global Warming Toepeeka ($65; www.simpleshoes.com) made from organic cotton and an outsole constructed from actual car tires. They even ship in a biodegradable bag.

If Dad prefers land to water, Timberland's Earthkeepers Boot ($160; www.timberland.com) feature organic canvas uppers and a 30 percent recycled rubber outsole with a 70 percent recycled moisture-wicking lining. Best of all, they'll stand up to the trail without any blisters. And if his hikes take him far from civilization, he's going to need water and something to sleep on. To keep Dad hydrated, pick up a 27 oz. stainless steel water bottle from Klean Kanteen ($17.45; www.kleankanteen.com). Sierra Designs' Verde 20 sleeping bag, with roughly 95 percent green materials including Climashield Green post-consumer recycled polyester insulation and Cocona lining (made from coconut shells), is as earth-friendly as a sleeping bag gets ($179; www.sierradesigns.com).  Send him on his adventure with a Sun Precaution Outback Straw Hat ($59.95; www.sunprecautions.com), with Solumbra's 30+ SPF fabric under the 4" brim to protect him from the sun's rays. And keep him energized while he's out with a pound of fresh Organic Bing Cherries from Diamond Organics ($15; www.diamondorganics.com).

Speaking of the sun's energy, help Dad stay in touch with home using free power from a Brunton SolarRoll ($295; www.brunton.com). Not only does it convert solar rays into juice for a cell phone or iPod, it's also the first flexible solar panel and it's waterproof. Go ahead, lash it to his new kayak. If you're looking for a slightly less expensive option, try Solio's compact, sturdy Magnesium Edition hybrid charger, which stores its charge for up to a year ($199; www.solio.com). For even more communication options, give him the Eton Voicelink FR1000 hand-cranked two-way  radio with General Mobile Radio Service technology, a built-in flashlight, cell phone charger, and access to NOAA weather channels ($150; www.etoncorp.com). Let him stow his new gear in an Osprey ReSource Series Revo daypack ($59; www.ospreypacks.com). Made out of 70 percent recycled materials, the Revo can carry all of Dad's day-to-day peripherals and papers, as well as his laptop.

And after a day or two in the outdoors, nothing can be more pleasing than a decent ale: Try St. Peter's Organic ale ($4.85/pint bottle) or Prince Charles' own Duchy Originals Organic ale ($5.29/pint bottle) (for retailers, see EuroBrew). You might even want to share one with him.
