Candy is dandy, but it's easy to choose a green gift that will capture Mom's heart this Mother's Day.
More cosmetics companies are embracing glass over plastic as a more eco-friendly packaging option. Mod Skin's Weightless Lotion made with green tea and Peru balsam contains organic ingredients ($46/3.4 oz.; www.modskinlabs.com). If Mom's a natural-born multitasker, she'll appreciate the All-in-One Organic Soap Garden ($45; www.danielleandcompany.com), a biodegradable planter containing soap and body wash made with organic shea butter, a bag of organic soil, and a sheet of tree-free paper with wildflower seeds embedded in it. Soak the soil, plant the paper, and watch the flowers grow.
Wine is always a good choice, especially when it's organic. Bonterra Wines - which means good earth - makes Cabernet and Viognier vintages in Mendocino County, California, from certified organically grown grapes ($15/bottle; www.bonterra.com). To store the bottles, buy her a Stave Wine Display made from recycled wine barrels ($63.80; www.pristineplanet.com).
For staving off the aftereffects of the wines, Von Natur offers the Headthrob Bath Soak with cinnamon and lemongrass essential oils ($22). Mom can follow up with the refreshing Grapefruit Whipped Butter ($42); all products contain organic ingredients and are and vegan certified (www.vonnatur.com). Or you can present Mom with a set of Earthen Natural Aroma Bath Fizzies from Verikira Naturals; it's like sitting in a tub of Alka-Seltzer perfumed with Egyptian chamomile ($22/4.65 oz.; www.verikira.com).
Think bamboo only comes in hardwood? Watch Mom as she pulls out the Lush Bamboo Organic Bath Robe and rubs the plush fabric against her face. She'll never believe the robe is 70 percent bamboo ($74.95; www.shirtsofbamboo,com).
First there was Slow Food, now there's Slow Fruit, dried by the sun or with warm air with no added sugar or preservatives. Strawberry, green apple, figs and other goodies are from the U.K.-based Southern Alps company ($4.99 - $7.99/package; www.igourmet.com). However, if high food prices have her cutting back trips to the farmer's market, she might appreciate a Tomato Success Kit, which she can use to grow her own food, organically of course, and exert a little feminist independence ($64.95; www.gardeners.com). For baking, give her the line of colanders, cutting boards and storage containers from Preserve Kitchenware by Recycline - all made from 100 percent recycled plastic in white and bright colors ($5.99-$24.99; available at Whole Foods).
Lastly, instead of sending Mom flowers, give her a Rosemary Topiary plant ($79; www.organicstyle.com), which will not only provide her kitchen with green, but also keep her from needing to buy fresh rosemary for a very long time.
