National Geographic Channel has announced six Web finalists in the first annual “Preserve Our Planet” College Film and PSA Contest.  The Web finalists are posted at www.preserveourplanet.com and online voting will determine the Web winners.  The Web winners receive the second place prize in each category — a previously announced panel of judges will select the first place winner in each category.

The film and PSA contest, in partnership with ecoAmerica and MonsterTRAK’s GreenCareers, is part of a National Geographic Society-wide initiative — “Preserve Our Planet” — to inspire and empower each of us to “think” conservation in our homes, communities, schools and workplaces.

The top Web PSA finalists are:

  • Melissa Courtney from University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla., for her PSA “Get in the Habit”
  • Pedro Jesus from Georgia State University in Atlanta, Ga., for his PSA “Save the Environment”
  • Ryan Stanisz from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., for his PSA “The New Animal Kingdom”

The top Web film finalists are:

  • Tyler Depke from Hope College in Holland, Mich., for his film “STOP!  Think Green and Save”
  • Genna Duberstein from American University in Washington, D.C., for her film “The Animal Cracker Nature Show”
  • Alex Jeffries from UCLA in Westwood, Calif., for his film “The Experimental Generation”

Online voting will last for two weeks, from March 18 to March 28, and individuals will be able to vote for one film and one PSA each day.

The Web film winner will receive $1,500, and the web PSA winner will receive $1,000.  Both will also receive a trip to Washington, D.C., to have their work screened at the kickoff event of the annual worldwide gathering of National Geographic Explorers on April 8, along with the first place winners to be selected by a panel of judges.
