Genetically modified organisms (GMOs)
Are created by inserting a gene from one organism into another organism. This alters the recipient’s genetic makeup to produce new and different traits, such as pest resistance or faster growth.
Geothermal
A geothermal heat pump uses water and antifreeze in pipes to move heat from the stable warmth of the earth underground to heat your home in the winter; in summer, it can remove heat from your house and store it underground. The process is extremely energy efficient, allowing geothermal systems to run on 25 to 50 percent less electricity than other heating systems.
Glyphosate
A non-selective herbicide, meaning it attacks all plants and not just weeds. Glyphosate works by inhibiting the nutrient absorption of plants and kills them. It has been noted to reduce the number of small animals and songbirds due to the destruction of their habitats. It is also toxic to earthworms, fish and beneficial insects and has been cited as responsible for killing non-targeted plants, including 74 endangered species. It is ranked the third most common pesticide-related illness causing eye and skin irritation.
Glycol Ethers
Widely used industrial solvents found in nail polish, deodorant, perfumes and other cosmetics, some glycol ethers are hazardous to the reproductive system. Other effects of overexposure include anemia and irritation of the skin, eyes, nose and throat. Avoid those listed on labels as EGPE, EGME, EGEE, DEGBE, PGME, DPGME and those with “methyl” in their names.
Greenhouse gases (GHGs)
Airborne chemicals responsible for trapping heat in the earth's atmosphere. They include carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and ozone from natural and human sources. Other manmade GHGs include include hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs), and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). An increase in greenhouse gases is responsible for the so-called greenhouse effect, a critical factor in global warming.
