Phosphates
Once widely used ingredients in laundry detergents, phosphates have been phased out, due to their damaging environmental impact. They are still present in dishwashing detergents and can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea if ingested, and severe skin irritation.
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs)
A fire retardant chemical linked to neurological, thyroid and reproductive damage in animals, which has been found to accumulate in the human body. PBDEs have been used in mattresses, furniture and electronics. As a result of industrial and other releases, PBDEs are found in many animals, making food another source of exposure for humans.
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)
Industrial pollutants that can persist in waterways for decades. They are probable carcinogens that have also been found to affect that body’s cognitive and immune systems. PCBs accumulate in fatty fish like salmon, as well as in oysters and other shellfish.
Polyester
A petroleum-derived product that contributes to the depletion of our non-renewable fossil fuel supply. Polyester production releases lung-damaging pollutants such as nitrogen and sulfur oxides, particulates, carbon monoxide, heavy metals and carbon dioxide.
Polystyrene
Better known by the brand name Styrofoam, polystyrene is a bulky, lightweight substance made from nonrenewable, hazardous chemicals which can potentially leach into food and water. Styrene might disrupt hormones and reproduction and is a possible human carcinogen according to the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer.
