Legaré Furniture's modular, interconnectable media stands are sturdy plywood made with FSC-certified Baltic birch and bonded using a low-formaldehyde glue. The pieces interlock without screws or tools, making DIY assembly incredibly easy. A clear, water-based lacquer is used for what Legaré calls its "natural" finish. And the stands are modular, so they can be connected side-by-side in a variety of configurations ($449/24" x 53" stand in natural; www.legarefurniture.com).

Bedroom

Crate & Barrel's elegant Bento Collection of bedroom furniture is made from fast-growing bamboo and bonded with formaldehyde-free glue. Start with a nightstand ($429; www.crateandbarrel.com).

IF Green's Platform Sleigh Bed is available in FSC-certified pecan wood and doesn't require a box spring. Both the glue and the finish are less-toxic and formaldehyde-free ($1,065 for queen; www.ifgreen.com).

Dining Room

Woodshanti's graceful bamboo table ($1,900) has FSC-certified mahogany edge banding and legs. The finish is made of linseed oil, and the glue is formaldehyde-free (www.woodshanti.com).

Kitchen

For an extra food-prep surface and storage, try Ikea's kitchen carts made of solid birch from well-managed forests. The Bekvam ($49.99) is unfinished; the Forhoja ($79.99) is finished with a clear nitrocellulose lacquer and larger, with drawers that pull out from two directions and two shelves (www.ikea.com).

Office

Green Culture's Solid Maple Writing Desk ($895) is available unfinished or finished with tung oil and beeswax (which gives it a honey-like hue). The FSC-certified wood is from forests in Washington and Oregon (www.greenculture.com).
