Shopping For and Drinking Organic Beer
-Beers "made with organic ingredients" are made from organic grains, but not processed in certified organic breweries. They still support organic farmers and are a good alternative if you can't find certified-organic beers.
-Buying locally produced beer that hasn't been shipped long distances is a worthy alternative, even if the brewery doesn't sell organic beer.
-Brew your own organic beer. Seven Bridges Cooperative sells starter kits at $90 and up (www.breworganic.com, 800-768-4409).
-When throwing a party for large numbers of people, look for breweries that sell beer in kegs or growlers to reduce wasting glass bottles or aluminum cans.
-Unless you're really dying for a cold one, buy non-refrigerated beer and refrigerate it at home or in an ice chest to reduce greenhouse gases related to in-store refrigeration.
-A good organic beer goes great with a good organic cheese. For a list of American organic or antibiotic-/hormone-free cheeses, see "Pure Cheese."
-Last but not least, organic beers don't contain any less alcohol, and are not "healthier," than conventional brews. Drink responsibly.
